Goa Gil aka “The last Hippie Standing” live at Pebble, Bengaluru

Goa Gil is one of the founding fathers of the Goa Trance movement and led the hippie revolution in his heydays when Goa was the capital of the hippie revolution. He was the pioneer of the “Goa trance” genre that spawned popular electronic music variants like psytrance, deep trance and transcendental trance music. The “Babajee”, as he lovingly known, has a cult following amongst psytrance aficionados and is definitively the spiritual guru behind the psytrance movement. Pebble, Bengaluru is bringing the living legend to Bengaluru for a gig aimed at appeasing the thriving Trance and Electronic music scene in Bengaluru.

From the early 1980s, many “Goa” hippies were becoming increasingly fascinated with early electronic music including acts like Kraftwerk. Gil and his friends soon gathered some equipment and started to DJ and playing live music in all nighters on the Goa beaches like Anjuna , Arambol  and Morjim. This mix of outdoor electronic dance parties with elements of Oriental mysticism gave birth to the psytrance movement that has now caught the imagination of the generation that is obsessed with Electronic music. The trance music of today owes its shape and form to the early experimental sounds created  by Goa Gil and his rag tag bunch of freethinking hippies.

Gil’s view is that “Dance is active meditation. When we dance, we go beyond thought, beyond mind and beyond our individuality to become one in the divine ecstasy of the union with the cosmic spirit. This is the essence of the trance dance experience”. Goa Gil uses Trance music and dance as a medium to achieve a state of nirvana or bliss on a heightened spiritual plane.
