The long unwinding hair that’s let down speaks volumes of Goa Gil’s focus. He does things differently. He chooses a party situation as a perfect medium for uplifting the participants’ consciousness. He calls it Trance Dance Experience.

Goa Gil possesses a rich psychedelic history!

Born in 1951 and brought up until 1969 in San Francisco, Gil was a witness to the birth of acid rock and hippie movement. He was also involved in the freak collectives of Family Dog and Sons of Champlin. Gil thought music scene in San Francisco was falling apart and moved on to Amsterdam and finally reached India to settle down in Goa. Inspired by the Sadhus, who grow their hair and cover themselves with ash, Gil became a sadhu. He became Baba Mangalanand under the auspices of Guru Mahant Nirmalananda Saraswati.

He tried to create a symphony and resonance between his first love music and the Yoga with the help of his gurus.

Thus born were the Music House, the Goa Full Moon parties, and his concept of “Redefining the Ancient Tribal Ritual for the 21st Century”.

Gil says: “Since the beginning of time mankind has used music and dance to commune with the Spirit of Nature and the Spirit of the Universe… We are using Trance Music and the Trance Dance Experience to set off a chain reaction in Consciousness…”

“Through the Trance Dance Experience hopefully people will become more sensitive and aware of themselves, their surroundings, the crossroads of humanity, and the needs of the planet… with this Awareness comes Understanding and Compassion… THAT is the need of the hour, and the true Goa state of mind !!!”

Gil met Ariane McAvoy in Goa in 1985 and have ever since been together with the latter’s penchant for African djembe (an instrument that is a drum) and the traditional music and dance of West Africa cast their influence on Gil. This inspired him in his musical concepts and journey too.

The band “The Nommos” is the popular music project of the couple now. The solo ethno-ambient-chill project of Ariane is Nimba and the objective of the two projects is to create an ensemble of a futuristic psychedelic, replete with ancient rhythms and spirit of traditional cultures.

The couple are always on the move across the globe to spread the Goan feeling through their trance dance events.
