The little Rafi, as he was popularly known as, Sonu Nigam was a child prodigy, who made an early entry into the world of Glitz and Glam. Celebrated for his flawless voice and lauded for his acting skills, Sonu Nigam made a wonderful start for his career in Bollywood with the movie Betaab (1983).
However, long before this Sonu Nigam had made his entry into the world of music (at the age of four), by performing alongside his father, Agam Kumar Nigam on stage. It was during these performances that Sonu Nigam chose to sing the song “Kya Hua Tera Vaada, Wo Kasam Wo Irada,” by Mohammed Rafi.
His talent was rewarded rightly and he got the much needed break when he came of age with the chartbuster, “Sandese Aate Hai” in Border in 1997, which earned him popularity overnight.
However, this success did not happen instantly and took many years of singing songs by Mohammed Rafi, for the “Rafi Ki Yaadein” albums released by T-Series. It was these albums that earned Sonu the name, “Rafi clone,” which was followed by a song in the movie “Janam” in 1990, but the movie never officially released.
A series of albums and numerous chart busters followed after the success of Sandese Aate Hai, making him the most sought after singer of the nation. Trained under Hindustani classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Sonu Nigam has explored the horizons of singing across numerous languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Bengali, Assamese, Nepali, Marathi, etc., to name a few.
This apart he had launched several Indi Pop albums as well, which were critically well acclaimed and were a huge success. The versatile artist has left no stone in entertaining the audience, which is evident from the fact that he has tried everything from acting to music direction apart from singing.
With a career spanning over a two and a half decades in the Indian music Industry in general and two decades in the Kannada film fraternity in specific, Sonu Nigam is the most celebrated icon of the Sandalwood.
